A Parrot Learns the Voice of a Revolution

In 1847 Rome a shoemaker’s parrot named Jack-a-fine bird grows bold with politics. He mimics cries from the Forum, learns from the crowd, and after witnessing Pope Pius IX’s rise and fall, finally shouts Viva la Republica as the city roars for national defense. The cobbler then joins the National Guard, vindicating the bird’s newfound patriotism.

Advertising Revolutionizes Wealth Across the Nation

A historic reflection traces how advertising grew from a mere local page to a powerful economic force. It recalls Townsend, a physician, who bankrupted himself to flood the country with his wares and Sarsaparilla ads, and Bonner, who paid $1,500 for space in a Weekly Tribune. The piece ends with a burst of four notes and cannon shots in the Park.
