Farmers meet at Freeport to press rail reform

A large Fifth District assembly in Freeport convened to protest railroad monopolies and push for state action. Delegates debated freight rates and urged Governor Beveridge to appoint farm-friendly railroad and warehouse commissioners. Speakers urged unity, enforcement of laws, and broader political realignment toward a farmers party.

Beggars in Dubuque Display Plakards for Donations

In Dubuque a group of beggars wear placards on their breasts bearing a mocked pledge that large bills are cheerfully exchanged for all donations over ten cents. The scene reflects local street theater and raises questions about charity norms and public commerce in the downtown area.

American company secures Samana lease and dominican rights

A group of American capitalists has secured a perpetual lease of Samana Bay and peninsula from the Dominican government. Possession was taken at the start of the year, with the purchase money paid in gold. The deal grants the company near autonomous powers including a flag, police, revenue officers, railroads, vessels, and tax collection, with disputes to be arbitrated by European powers. Capital is $20,000,000. Pacific Mail Steamship Co. will run regular steamers between New York and Samana Bay.
