The department invites farmers of Stephenson County to contribute articles on any farming subject. Write plainly and on one side of the paper for publication.
An 1870 essay by N. R. Smith urges Northwest readers to protect timber resources. It argues rapid clearing threatens climate, agriculture, and future prosperity, contrasting wood scarcity with expansion of railroads, fences, and farms. The piece warns of wind erosion, heat, and drought if forests vanish, calling on farmers to halt destructive selling of timber lots.
The passage urges urgent action to stop the depopulation of lands and the drying streams caused by forest destruction. It questions the neglect of forests despite enjoying wealth from virgin soil and warns against bequeathing a diminished legacy to posterity, stressing a duty to protect nature.
In Prairie Farmer F P replies about farm bookkeeping and costs. The writer argues farming profitability cannot be judged from a single field or crop. Whole farm balances must be considered, including stale land, wear, interest, and fluctuating prices.
At a late American Pomological Society session a graft hybrid method was discussed to make a sweet and sour apple from Rhode Island Greening and Tasman’s Sweet. Doubts arise over origin claims, consistency, and whether such a variety exists beyond anecdote. Also noted: large fruit packing plant funding in Elwin and Utah governor appointment.
