National politics split by Congress and President in 1868
From Washington January 26 1868 the Epiron Journal reports fierce quarrels in the capital over who shall govern Congress backed by loyal North or the Southern backed President. It notes moves to curb the Supreme Court and rebuilds, plus Stanton replaced Grant in command and Hancock attacked by Copperhead press. It mentions Surratt trial due next month and Horace Greeley’s possible Grant backing.
