In Pontyien a report states that water exposed in a room absorbs respired gases, becoming filthy while air improves, and colder water holds more gas. A pail at ordinary temp may store carbonic acid and pneumonia vapors, doubling when cooled. Water kept indoors remains unfit for use. pump water out in the morning before use to avoid illness.
Dr Vogel discusses Liebig’s 1826 27 research on ammonia nitrate in rain and details his own findings on ammonia in snow and snow water. Measured per liter, freshly fallen snow from a basin at 0 yielded 0.008 g, at -8 yielded 0.002 g, and -9 to -15 yielded 0 g, with snow on manure soil 0.012 g, on meadow 0.009 g, and on a zinc roof 0.004 g.
James Saunderson reports on British harvests noting wheat below average by six bushels per acre with good condition and heavy weight. Barley 10 percent under, beans 15 percent above, peas abundant. As horse disease wanes the scare resurfaces that chickens suffer from ornicephalmycosis or similar ills. The author dismisses the rumor as foolish, noting reports were false and urging buyers to inspect poultry before purchase. Weather can cause colds in fowl, but careful selection and keeping sick birds from market will restore poultry in days.
A farmer and several children fall ill with typhoid after drinking from a well close to a privy. The physician links water contamination from decomposing animal matter to the outbreak.
