The next issue completes the third volume and the paper will cost one dollar and fifty cents per annum in advance. If not prepaid, the old terms apply. Subscriptions should be renewed now. those with unpaid accounts may settle. The paper will enlarge in spring with four extra columns of reading matter and improved quality.
A period piece argues that the nation faces a crisis in governance and destiny. It recalls the Constitution’s adoption, Missouri compromise, foreign peace, and warns against territorial ambitions while praising concord and constitutional reforms. It includes commentary on Fillmore's message and party politics.
The Galena Jeffersonian offers an olive branch to the Prairie Democrat but the contemporary paper rejects the move. The Democrat is accused of being a Whig paper in past disputes, while the Jeffersonian argues alignment with the Whig cause. The Prairie Democrat predicts the Democrat will back the judicial regulator and notes extra copies of Till mor(e)’s Message are available.
Monroe Sentinel readers learn that the Plank Road committee will not start stock subscriptions until the Illinois Central Rail Road location is resolved. With a Freeport connection now arranged, they call a Devonville meeting on the second Tuesday in January at 2 PM to organize the Freeport and Monroe Plank Road Company and elect officers if funding occurs.
A fragmented column reviews the Herald of the Union with Edwards as a noted author, discusses congress measures, and notes the Central and Galena and Chicago rail junction at Freeport. It also praises Luman Montague Esquire’s nursery, critiques competing papers, and questions British ore and provisions imports while citing New York’s pauper and immigrant statistics for the year.
The report states 118,283 foreigners, over 70 percent of all aid recipients, were from foreign countries while 45,116 or under 80 percent were natives. In the year just closed pauperism remained active but aid-requiring numbers fell below population growth, being 325 fewer families and 1260 fewer people than in a prior period.
A Mechanic denounces Epivonsi of the last Democrat as a "Miltonic" pretender and a demagogue. He accuses the Democrat of vulgar bitterness, insults toward the Whig press, and political vanity. He questions the writer’s eligibility and motives, urges editors to rebuke such arrogance, and calls for dropping the feud to mend conduct.
A public meeting closed a second course of astronomy and physiology lectures by Rev. R. Dunn. Attendees elected T. J. Turner as chair and J. Chailton as secretary. A committee drafted unanimously adopted resolutions praising Dunn and denouncing itinerant lecturers.
In Freeport on December 2 1851 residents praised Mr Dunn late of Boston for anatomical and physiological lectures. They commend his public and social influence and wish him well as he travels, hoping his future endeavors be warmly received wherever duty or inclination leads. Congressional proceedings and weather notes follow, detailing Senate actions, railroad bills, and snowfall in New York regions.
The Whigs of the State of [limuis acarasteetfnt] request a convention at Springfield on the fourth Monday of December to consider actions for party interests and stronger organization. Wilson and many others are listed among attendees.
