Ancient Companions Visit Freeport in 1881 Pilgrimage

The Ancient Companions' Domestic Club of Chicago held its annual pilgrimage to Freeport on December 2 1881. Grand Commander L L Munn welcomed visiting Companions, with a banquet and ceremonies at the asylum, honoring Freeport Commandery No 7 and Chicago members while presenting the Pythagorean urn and Chaldean helmet.

The Board met after adjournment to decide who will hold the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction for the coming year. It is hoped a good Republican and a competent man will be chosen, unlike the current incumbent who lacks these qualifications.

Fire destroys mills in Minneapolis four mills burned

Early Sunday fire swept the milling district of Minneapolis destroying four flouring mills and one cotton mill. An explosion in the Minneapolis mill, likely from flour dust, killed four men and seriously wounded several others. Debris removal is needed to determine additional fatalities. Loss is estimated at 558000 with about 207175 insured.

Chicago Subpoenaed Witness Testifies on Guiteau Trial

Emery A. Storrs of Chicago, subpoenaed by the defense and resisting arrest without an attachment order, testified on cross examination that he never saw anything in Guiteau to indicate he could not distinguish right from wrong. He did not observe conduct suggesting lack of guilt or responsibility for crime.

Miss Sarah Miller Dies After Pulmonary Decline

Miss Sarah E. Miller daughter of John Miller and sister of B F Miller died at the German Insurance Company office from consumption after years of pulmonary trouble. She served her family faithfully after her mother’s death, was a Salem Church member, and chose funeral hymns sung at Salem Church. Burial was in the Lancaster schoolhouse cemetery beside her mother. She was twenty four years ten months and sixteen days old.
