An eyewitness recounts a deadly confrontation in Cairo where Joe Spencer, a boatside innkeeper, threatened to blow up the crowd with gunpowder and a revolver. After setting his boat ablaze, he fired on bystanders, disappeared when a pistol misfired, and plunged into the river with a heavy object at his waist. Five men were wounded and one gravely hurt.
Reports from multiple precincts in the Kansas Territory show Whitfield leading in the Fourth and Seventh districts with large majorities.
