Murder of Dr Hogle at Wausau by Dr Bennet
The Stepe ns Point Journal recounts the unprovoked murder of Dr E Hogle of Stephens Point Wis at Wausau by Dr J C Bennet. Bennet obtained a gun and, while Hogle washed in a closet, shot him in the office, killing him before bystanders could intervene.
Wild Saloon Incident Ends in Jail and Lynch Fear
Bennet followed by a large crowd reaches a saloon where he surrenders his gun and is taken by Sheriff Gheca after being arrested by R. H. Johnson. The crowd threatens lynching, a jail rope is stretched, and deputies guard the jail as Sheriff Gheca leads efforts to prevent further violence. The man, about 30, had a troubled life since moving to Wisconsin from Lock Haven, with heavy liquor use and limited reform aided briefly by a church and a temperate rival. He had threatened Hogle, a temperate man, with violence if he interfered with his business. Dr. Edwin Hogle, connected to Mrs. Jasper Mallory, is mourned in a memorial poem written by his aunt for Rock Run.
