Train and hopper bed derailment in a strange land
A traveling car wrestles a grade and hoppers on a Union Pacific stretch. The narrator and companions outrun a mash of dead hoppers, stop the car after nineteen minutes and eighteen miles traveled, then witness a railroad engineer tactic to pass a ahead train. The scene ends with a claim of loss of weight and awe at the strange country.

Bannocks sign up as scouts amid Nez Perce danger
At Fort Hall Idaho a council with Fort Hall commandant and Agent Danilson led Bannock head men to approve enlistment of many Bannocks as scouts against the Nez Perces, easing fears of hostility. A large Indian party crossed toward Henrys Lake, suspected hostiles, while word to General Howard notes a possible shift toward the Canadian style of indirect rule and legal protections for Indians under a mounted police system.
