The dispatches claim Hungarians rout Russians and Austrians, with Pesth and Buda under siege or fall. Reports describe Vienna in alarm, mass conscription, and battles at Waitzen, Cracow, and along the Theiss while Papal and French actions surface.
The President announces a proclamation warning U S citizens against joining an armed expedition to invade Cuba or parts of Mexico, stressing obedience to laws and treaties and promising penalties. The notice cites secrecy, funds, and arms preparations in New Orleans and New York as evidence of the plot, with officials ordered to arrest offenders. The receipts of the Galena and Chicago Railroad for passengers average thirty to thirty five dollars daily. The big road is now extended to Babcock's Grove a distance of twenty one miles.

Returns from Nashville Chicago and Louisville show the Whig led congress and senate majorities thinning while Democrats gain in several districts. Kentucky and Indiana cast votes that threaten Whig control as pro slavery forces consolidate and western states shift toward Democratic strength.

The St Louis News Era cites political mismanagement in southern Illinois, denouncing demagogues and urging citizens to guard the franchise and elect honest, capable officials. It cites Shawneetown Advocate ridiculing fasting proclamation as further proof of Lo cofoco weakness and political darkness.
The large Lake steamer Empire State was wrecked on the 8th while traveling from Chicago to Buffalo. A leak appeared after a severe storm forcing a shoreing. Passengers and luggage were taken off by the propeller Delaware. The ship rests in about nine feet of water with broken guards and may be salvaged only with favorable weather.
The people of Southport Wisconsin have erected a brick schoolhouse 43 by 70 feet two stories high at a cost about 65000. It opened recently with four hundred scholars. The principal earns 800 annually, the first assistant 750. Three female teachers are employed, one at 350 and the others at 200 each. The article notes appreciation for competent teachers.
Plans contemplate a brick structure on Tremont House site in Chicago. The 5.5 story block, 100 by 180 feet, will feature an observatory, iron balcony fronts, 12 stores on the ground floor, 180 lodging rooms, suites, a large dining hall for 220, and a galvanized iron roof. Estimated cost about 40,000 dollars.
The Board of Health in New York City reported 89 cases of cholera and 3 deaths on the fifth instant.

Shipping, weather, and political notes recount a burned ship Philadelphia, a Barker House rental, and a proposed Augusta convention for a Territorial Government.
