Ill and weary Peter Patterson, craving ease, follows a doctor's advice to escape city life. He rents a country widow's care and medicines, enjoys nursing and homemade bread, and falls for Mrs. Mantle. He proposes, is accepted, and soon plans to bring his bride home for Christmas.
A July 23 1872 address at Cooper Institute New York by Roscoe Conkling rails against attacks on President Grant. The open letter denounces slanders and seeks to defend Grants record from Democratic critics, praising his wartime leadership and calling out bipartisanship and ethical gifts to veterans. It argues Grant embodies integrity, urges Democrats to rally to his side, and criticizes Greeley and anti Grant tactics.
