Tramps, taverns, and a proposed saloon idea
A wry column recalls a destructive fire that devastated ten acres of barley and stored hay and tools. It rebukes drinking tramps, argues for work over whisky, and endorses a liquor-free social saloon with billiards, reading room, and light-filled halls. The piece contrasts editorials on libraries vs drinking establishments and praises the Freeport Journal’s suggestion.
