President Garfield convalesces as ball location is confirmed

The Aug 1 bulletin reports Garfield improving appetite and sleep as fever subsides. Surgeons note normal pulse and vitals. Induction balance tests by Bell and Taintor conclude the ball is located in the front abdominal wall, over the groin, about five inches below and right of the navel.

Justice Clifford Funeral in Portland Maine

Justice Clifford's funeral was held in Portland on Thursday afternoon with pallbearers including Chief Justice Waite Judges Miller Fox Chief Justice Appleton and Judge Walton of Maine Bion Bradbury and John Roud of Portland Rev De Hill president of Harvard conducted the services. The remains were buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

On June 16, 1881 Daniel T. Lawson of Wellsville Ohio achieved the first successful boiler explosion by scientists. His six foot boiler with 524 pound iron strength burst at 280 pounds pressure after an unsuccessful test at 225. Lawson holds patents on the theory to prevent explosions and describes a concussive mechanism from rapid superheating and sudden vacuum followed by rapid steam reformation, causing multiple blasts as steam enters the cylinder.
