It would unlock water power for manufacturing and boost Ottawa’s regional prominence, with canal commerce and tolls recorded in Ottawa stores and canal office books.
The Speaker, at Mr Crawford's request, named a committee to investigate the Galphin claim. Mr Harris urged broad instructions to uncover origin, prosecution, legal authority, payments, and recipients, with power to summon persons and papers. The rule was adopted.
The Nicaragua Treaty has been signed at Washington, easing fears of disturbance under Taylor’s administration. The president’s careful, prudent handling is praised, with faith in the people’s impartial judgment. Details of the treaty have not yet reached readers.

A Jo Daviess Stephenson counties citizens committee urged starting the road at the eastern end with westward progression. Resolutions mandated phased construction to benefit communities and investors, with the chief engineer to report costs and timing for sections from Hein to Dundee and onward, ensuring economy and early operation.
