Minister resigns over loss of faith at Unity Church

At Evansville Indiana Reverend George Chainey announced his resignation stating he is not a Christian and offered to remain only if not asked to pray or give benediction. He urged selling hymn books for waste paper while his nine page resignation sermon rejects supernaturalism and worship as idolatry. Memorial Day Observed by Grand Army of the Republic

General Orders announce Memorial Day to be observed on the 29th, with floral tributes to departed comrades. Grant reception in Galena after cross country tour

General Grant and party arrived in Galena at ten minutes after last evening. The group included Mrs Grant Colonel Fred Grant Miss Kittie Felt Governor Cullom and Gen John A McNulta. They were greeted by a crowd at the depot and driven to the Grant home for supper. The General and party have traveled from Philadelphia to Cuba Mexico and back to the United States with ovations along the way. He will stay in Galena until early June then head to Colorado while Mrs Grant remains in Denver. Col Fred Grant heads to Chicago next.

Howgate Arctic Expedition Bill Moves Through House

A bill to equip the Howgate Arctic Expedition under Captain I W Howgate passed the House and awaits Senate action. The vessel is the British steamer Gulnare, at Alexandria Va, about 247 tons, built Glasgow 1878. The expedition plans a May departure with 25 men and scientists, touching Labrador and Greenland before reaching Smiths Sound.
