Washington and His Mount Vernon Farm Network
The Mount Vernon farm of General Washington covered about ten thousand acres in one block, five miles from the Mansion House. Washington visited daily and conducted agriculture experiments, with hundreds of acres under oats, wheat, corn, and other crops. His operations included 140 horses, 109 cows, 236 cattle, 500 sheep and 250 workers, with 24 ploughs active throughout the war. In 1780 he slaughtered 150 hogs for family and slave provisions.

Seed bed preparation for tobacco and horse suicide at Chico
An article explains a tobacco seed bed method using rich soil cleared of brush and burned to heat the ground, sowing at half an ounce per twenty square yards and shading with brush until seedlings reach one inch. It also reports a horse in Chico's Livery Stable killing itself by hanging, blamed on removal from mail duty due to poor harness conditions.
