Quinine, The Cinchona Remedy From Calisaya Bark

The alkaline quinine, long a universal tonic, was discovered less than sixty years ago by Pelletier. The Academy awarded him 10,000 francs. Quinine is valued as a prophylactic, used in navies near fever coastlines, though not effective for all intermittent fevers. It is derived from calisaya bark in Bolivia and Carabaya, Peru, with bark gathered in forests eleven miles from settlements. Cascarillos roam the woods to harvest and ship to Europe and America. The common West and South preparation is the sulphate, or disulphate, of quinine.
