Vast snake sighting off Tortugas stuns ship crew
The steamship Mexico, Capt. Pitfield, reported passing through a mass of water snakes of varied sizes near the Tortugas on a routine voyage. Passengers and crew watched as serpents, from five to fourteen feet, rose and struck at waves, a spectacle described as unseen in sea annals. The incident raises questions about snakes in salt water and cites Captain Pitfield as authority for the account.

Newport Heroine Ida Lewis and Lincoln Lectures
Long letter praises Ida Lewis of Lime Rock Lighthouse for repeatedly rescuing mariners near Newport and rowing feats rivaling men. It also notes Horace Greeley’s Cooper Institute lecture on Abraham Lincoln, debating education and the value of the American stump. The item closes with a bizarre anecdote about a Newburgh photographer and a Newburgh color joke and a Louisville resident’s grand house boast.
