The Freeport Journal reports the spring term opened under new auspices with Mr. Burchard as principal and about 130 scholars on day two, rising steadily. It extols the Union school’s lower tuition, department division, and public benefit, urging generous local support to sustain it as a moral ornament to Freeport.
Spring brings ambitious construction in Freeport with several new three story buildings planned on the Public Square and Stephenson Street. Notable new structures include Judea Fearnall’s on the south side square, Martin & Karcher on Stephenson, Mitchell & Putnam at Stephenson and Chicago, and K I T Myde at his current site. Wyde plans a 45 by 77 foot three story hall with basement rooms, aimed to be ventilated and spacious for a public assembly. The town also anticipates many new dwellings and durable, substantial developments reflecting rising business importance.
The Mt Carroll journal notes a successful teachers institute led by Rav W W Harsha, with about fifty teachers and many citizens in attendance. It highlights the Mt Carroll Seminary’s flourishing status, a new large building, and strong prospects for expanding enrollment. The village shows growth in mills, a distillery, a foundry, and plans to manufacture $30,000 in stoves plus machinery, signaling strong investment appeal.
The Senate approved a Deficiency bill with amendments funding a new Customs House site in San Francisco and a fee housing for Portland Maine. It also completed an amendment allocating funds for hospital projects in Cleveland St. Louis Chicago Paducah Louisville Evansville San Francisco and Burlington Iowa. Additional amendments passed for finishing Custom Houses in St Louis Mobile Cincinnati Louisville Bangor Bath Wilmington Providence.

It includes speeches by Douglas Chase Smith Averett Wake Badger Seward and Sumner with a history of the 1820 and 1850 Compromises and Seward on California’s 1850 admission. Price 25 cents. Also notices Mrs Guizzar’s millinery shop opens next Saturday and Freeport ladies are reminded.
News from Connecticut and Rhode Island shows public support turning against Douglas and his policies. Connecticut's governor race, senate, and house results favor Whigs, with Ingham leading, and Rhode Island’s results place William P. Hoppin ahead by nearly 3,000 votes.
