Opposition to Paris Exposition appropriation debate in Congress
In 1866, Hon. F. E. B. Washburne rebukes a Massachusetts proposal to spend $100,000 on the Paris 1867 Exposition, arguing against public funding for private interests. He cites Illinois and national debt, questions salaries for nine to nineteen new officials, and urges retrenchment. He recalls 1855 exhibit economy and laments favoritism toward exhibitions abroad.
