An offer to recruit Daily Journal subscribers details a plan with Mr F Crocker of Finkle and Lyon Sewing Machine Co to supply sixty dollar sewing machines at reduced prices. Prospective agents win a machine by sponsoring twenty, or ten, or five subscribers, with freight paid from Chicago. The notice touts the deal as the lowest retail price and urges club formation to aid the unpoor and reward effort.
A large gathering in Freeport marked by a grand supper hosted by Excelsior Lodge No. 97 at the Howard House. Col. Turner spoke on Masonry vows, Gen. Atkins recalled army ties, and members praised the lodge’s influence and the hotel’s management. The event drew about 130 residents and ended with plans for future civic dinners.
