The diary recounts a father's journey to Illinois from Chicago when it was a frontier village. He describes clear lakes with fish and turtles, light sandy soil, and corn prospects. He climbs a hill to reflect on past and present as Native Americans fade under civilization. Westward, ravines and lakes expand as the journey continues (Concluded on Page 2).
Milve Beeson of St. Louis visits Freeport to promote the Christian Home for orphans the only agency aiding the aged and helpless in the city. The home has housed twenty six orphan siblings under one roof for twenty six years and keeps families together when adopted out. A souvenir donation of Evening Prayer priced at 26 cents, with a Christian Home paper at 50 cents a year, funds the work, with larger gifts going directly to the home. September was warmer than 1907 with rare clear days until late month. A cold wave trimmed the average, as temperatures ranged from highs near 90 to a 28 degree low on the 29th. Four year daily averages are listed, showing a trend toward an early Indian summer if frost appears.
