In Wheeling on September 21 ex Governor A B Fleming, for Monongah Coal, obtained a perpetual injunction against Eugene V Debs and co defendants as no appearance was made. Judge Jackson stated he would issue the same order again, noting the ruling rests on good law morals and justice and protects property rights without curtailing miners free speech.
Springfield hosts the state convention of coal miners with about sixty delegates from most mining points. The gathering, larger than last August's meeting, represents roughly 15,000 coal miners. Delegates are apportioned one per 100 miners, with northern Illinois points including Streator, Marquette, Danville, Spring Valley, Braceville, Braidwood, Coal City, Seatonville, Rossville, and Toluca.
A fire deep in the main slope of Mine No 2 at Belle Ellen near Blocton, Alabama, trapped five workers. About 100 men were employed, fifty rescued, and searchers saved several unconscious miners as crowds gathered. The missing are Herman Kramer Hubbard Foley Henry Reeves Frank James and William Tairflax.
Rock Island No 23 westbound and a Union Pacific stock train collided head on two miles east of Muncie at 9 30 last night. Both locomotives wrecked, Rock Island baggage car shattered, several stock cars damaged. Engineers James W Scartf and Charles Goodall seriously injured. One woman passenger cut by glass. Cause cited as Rock Island crews ignoring orders to pass the stock train at Muncie.
Chicago reports scores from league play on September 21. Philadelphia defeated Washington 2 to 1, New York beat Baltimore 10 to 7. Western League games included Milwaukee edging Minneapolis 7 to 6 and Detroit defeating Indianapolis 11 to 7 in game one, with Indianapolis 0 to Detroit 5 in game two. Western Association results show Cedar Rapids 7 Des Moines 4, Quincy 7 Des Moines 4, Burlington 19 St Joseph 6, Rockford 9 Dubuque 4.
After a weeklong pause the inquest into the death of Bank Cashier Elmer E. Struble in Shepherd Michigan has resumed. New witnesses have been secured and are expected to clarify the death by own action theory. No significant evidence was presented at yesterday's session.
Ottumwa Iowa Sept 21 The Eldon marshal C J Stevens convicted of breaking and entering in the last of the bank robbery cases. Jury found him guilty only of opening the bank and letting robbers in despite accomplice testimony. Greensburg Ind bank to liquidate with funds to pay depositors in full. American Federation of Labor council meets in Washington. State department has not been notified of Nicaraguan uprising.
