Oxtenco forecast shows fair tonight and Wednesday with slightly cooler temperatures in the extreme north. NW winds will predominates, aiding a cooler feel late tonight into the next day.
New York reports Cornelius Vanderbilt died this morning at his Fifth Avenue residence after a rapid decline following an illness from a stroke. He had returned from Newport with his wife and retired before collapsing. Mrs. Vanderbilt and daughter Gladys mourn his loss as physicians arrived too late. Funeral is expected Friday.
In Tuoxanor New York on September 12 a large crowd watched the bantam championship fight. McGovern and Palmer weighed likely under 120 pounds. McGovern won in the first round, a fast rushing attack yielding a decisive left hook and right flash that dropped Palmer. Palmer rose but was counted out at 2:32.
The great council gathered in Washington with 150 delegates and 600 other members. After welcomes, Great Incohenee George K. Green of New York gave the annual address, noting past year receipts of 1,427,405 and disbursements of 558,605, including 454,000 for relief and the remainder for funerals.
Paris reports Premier Waldeck Rousseau told the cabinet there were no outbreaks anywhere as a result of the Dreyfus verdict and that no action is expected in the Dreyfus matter.
In Baltimore on September 12 special guest Captain N Mayo Dyer, famed for Manila and command of the cruiser Baltimore at Manila Bay, attends city events. A banquet concludes the day’s celebration this evening.
Manufacturers supplying the Missouri River valley and nearby points met at Cuicano on September 12 to discuss advancing the price of candy.
Rennes reports Matthieu Dreyfus visited his brother this morning and found him bearing up well. The prisoner has received an enormous number of sympathy letters since Saturday.
Exar Illinois reports on the board of trade with 2,540 pounds of butter sold at 22 cents and 2,400 pounds at 22 and a half cents. The market was declared firm at 22 cents. The weekly output reached 528,000 pounds.
Washiton Sept 12 Special reports the appointment of Wm S Blair formerly a private in Company M Fiftieth Iowa to the rank of lieutenant in the Forty-fourth Volunteers within the current military reorganization and promotions.
Mrs. Alice Sanborn-Brown Mrs. L. Nagle and Mrs. Geo. Smith were chosen as delegates to the ninth district WCTU convention to be held in Belvidere September 19 21.
A letter from Cuasparan Illinois invites county Domestic Science officers to select one capable girl aged 17 or older to be a pupil in a school of cookery at the state fairgrounds in Springfield from September 25 to October 7. Transportation only, free boarding and lodging, participants chosen by a coalition of local women’s groups.
Irwin Shank of Polo, about 18, was attacked by Lawrence Ryan after accompanying Rosie Kastner and Jennie Coughling home from a dance in Dixon Illinois. Shank suffered severe facial injuries, escaped nude for a time, was captured, and remains in serious condition. Ryan is jailed with a swollen hand, claiming Shank insulted him at the dance.
In Oregon Illinois on September 11 a schoolgirl daughter of John Ahlstrand was knocked down by a bicycle and suffered a dislocated neck. Dr J B Davis planned to call another physician but the girl resisted and the bone realigned on its own. She is recovering well and relief follows the incident.
The Ferris Comedians debuted to a packed Freeport Grand for a week long engagement with encores and strong audience demand. Their show features a strong cast in My Jim and An Innocent Sinner plus vaudeville between acts, drawing standing room crowds. The Holden Comedy company also opened at a German opera house with La Belle Marie and high praise for ensemble strength and nightly specialty acts. Tonight they present The Ranch King with more laughs and pathos ahead.
In Rockford a circuit court filing shows Mrs Clara E Denio seeks an absolute divorce from Devert W Denio. She requests alimony and custody of two children, claims desertion and that he earns at least 60 a month as a painter. They married in Freeport on Aug 25 1892. Trial set for October term. Frost and McEvoy represent Mrs Denio.
Miss Daisy Reeder visits Milwaukee relatives. T. A. Saul family depart for the east visiting Washington Philadelphia and New York. Mrs. Margaret Kemper to Chicago for weeks with her son. Mrs. Hall’s daughter Daisy has died after two years illness of consumption. J Patridge visits Freeport. R B Leamon returns from Nebraska and Colorado. Kathryn Krape goes to Carthage for college. C W Hayes and family visit D W Hayes in Lena.
The Wheelers syndicate, funding the water works purchase, met informally with the city council and outlined their method. Alderman Dana and others will inspect the pumping station boilers and engines, seen as due for replacement, with a special meeting likely tomorrow night to act on the purchase.
Pretoria Sept 12 Special The British cabinet despatch of Friday has just been handed to the Transvaal government.
H S Hemerdinger suffers a bout of typhoid fever at St Francis hospital. Gus Klogges shows improvement while Miss Jessie Snyder remains ill. Beechams Pills claimed to cure flatulence.
Probate petitions filed for Wm Bressler M Stewart Catherine Murphy John A Burchard B H Parks Caroline Hoy Susan Hamman and others. Bonds deeds and sales of real estate ordered or recorded with appraisers and letters issued. Guardianship and inventories noted with claims and settlements including Kilppstein Klippstein and Young locales.
Albert D. Martin, wanted for bigamy, was arrested at Warren NL and brought back. Bound over to the grand jury, he is jailed. His companion Mrs. Bartlitt, also jailed on a bigamy charge, led authorities to Martin and said they hope to serve terms together at Joliet, then live together.
Dr C V Starke a prominent physician burned a French flag in Rockford Illinois before several hundred people. The ceremony was assisted by Rev Magnus Larson pastor of the Swedish Baptist church. Both delivered addresses deploring the Dreyfus verdict and were enthusiastically applauded.
In Sycamore Illinois on September 11 Henry Court and John Byers were crossing the north bridge with a steam thrasher when the stringers gave way. The engine fell into the river trapping the men between the engine front and the tank and they were badly scalded.
