The Grand Encampment of the Republic opened in Philadelphia on September 4, as veterans gathered. Veterans greeted by welcoming crowds, with Sampson’s fleet mentioned as arriving in the city.
Thousands gather as the city prepares the greatest reunion with the veterans parade tomorrow. The Avenue of Fame along Broad Street features fifty foot columns, electric lights, and festoons, with two smaller twenty five foot columns flanking Broad Street. City Hall fronts glow with thirty foot electric pieces highlighting the G A R badge, while Pann’s statue soars above the glow over the parade route.
RockfordPost No.1 leads 1600 tents at Camp Sexton near Belmont for a Grand Army encampment sheltering 10000 veterans. Parade will have twelve divisions and 42000 men line the route past the city hall where President McKinley and secretaries are expected. Boyd's Girl Cadets of Topeka attract attention. Two candidates for commander in chief include D Shaw and Leo Bassieur.
General Charles Miller of Venango Pennsylvania attends a patriotic women encampment where the National Association of Army Nurses of the Civil War will meet to elect officers and the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic will also elect officers.
Saturday league scores feature wins by Pittsburgh Chicago St Louis and Cincinnati with doubleheaders. Western League results show Minneapolis Grand Rapids Detroit Milwaukee and Indianapolis Kansas City victories. Standings list Brooklyn Boston Philadelphia Baltimore St Louis Cincinnati Chicago Pittsburgh Louisville New York Washington Cleveland with win totals and percentages.
A young soldier Henry Waggoner, died of yellow fever near Vincennes Indiana. He was buried Saturday against health orders prompting state board action. Waggoner’s burial sparked widespread alarm as many residents were exposed. Reports from New Orleans and Key West note fever activity and multiple cases and deaths as authorities trace the outbreak.
Three men August Scherk Nicholas Fass and William Holle were killed when the north bound Chicago and Northwestern train struck their buggy at Cedar Grove on Sept 4. Albert Icke was injured but later expected to recover. The victims were well known Sheboygan County businessmen and had just returned from Belgium.
Two masked men entered Harry Green's gambling rooms in downtown Spokane at 4 am yesterday, held up fifteen men, looted tills and a safe, and fled with 1900 dollars in cash and bills. Policeman Gemming was shot in the groin during the pursuit and may be fatally wounded.
A group of five Toledo boys aged 18 to 20 set out to tour the country by riding trains. On Saturday night three jumped from a fast moving Dallimore and Ohio train near Akron. Abraham Klein died later from injuries. Thomas Judd Howard Lease and Frank Dover were slightly injured.
Secretary of the Treasury and Mrs. Gage will depart Washington around September 10 for Chicago and other western cities. He will stay through the October festivities in the Lake City, while Mrs. Gage intends to extend her stay into late autumn.
Detroit September 4 General Russell A. Alger said he would depart for the east again today and would not announce anything about his senatorial candidacy before leaving.
The 60th anniversary of Henry George’s birth was celebrated yesterday afternoon at Grand Central Palace under the Manhattan Single Tax club with about 1,000 attendees in New York.
Walter I. Koeller a Dixon Ill graduate and Griffin Car Works bookkeeper was found stabbed to death in his Fulton street room Saturday night. Police suspect jealousy or revenge as the motive. Koeller had recently dated Miss Jessie Horn of Shirley Ill and was also courting Miss Scott. He had told his brother of jealous college mates and named two suspects.
Governor Tanner criticizes Senator Shelby M. Cullom over claims about commissions in new volunteer regiments for Illinois soldiers. He denies Illinois received fair treatment in commission numbers and says Cullom contradicted his own interview.
A Philadelphia Inquirer anecdote recalls a central city well known restaurant where a waiter explains why he must not take a glass from a patron’s hand. He notes the marble counter heightens risk of breakage and that the waiter would fill the glass only after the patron sets it down.

Unknown assailants ambushed guards on the Carterville to Brush Mines road in Carbondale Illinois. About thirty shots exchanged with no known casualties. Brush miners demands were from non union workers, not strikers. A second item reports Ferguson O Toole of Springfield believed dead in a Chicago and Alton wreck but alive and working in Gallup New Mexico mines.

Labor day parade formed on Michigan avenue at 9 a.m. heading north then west and north to Dearborn before crossing the river to Lincoln park. About 15,000 to 20,000 participants marched, with 5 speakers expected at Sharpshooter's park under the Building Trades council. Notables invited include W J Calhoun and mayor David S Rose among others.

Regro Rioters Are Convicted in Darien Georgia on Saturday two blocks of five and an extra rioter faced trial. Four of the first group were convicted one acquitted and in the second four were convicted with a hung jury for the fifth a woman. A solitary rioter was convicted after seeking severance bringing total convictions to fourteen in two days. The rioters claimed they feared a jailed black man would be lynched after assault charges against a white woman.
