Dispatches indicate Pittsburgh area miners, led by Ratchford, prefer a 69 cent settlement and reject the 64 cent offer pending arbitration. District leaders push to continue the fight, while national boards weigh referendum action and potential further conferences.
Pittsburg reports Colonel Rend met with about 1000 miners at McDonald Pa to discuss a proposed settlement of the strike. The committee indicated support for the plan and urged arbitration, arguing that a temporary deal would benefit neither side. A joint operators and miners convention in Western Pennsylvania is urged to consider terms, with another meeting to set resolutions and potential return to work at the Columbus conference rate.
A paper notes that most operators on the Youghiogheny division of the Pittsburgh McKeesport and Youghiogheny and on the McDonald branch of the Panhandle have signed the agreement, reaching over 95 percent. Slowness of river operators to sign creates doubt about achieving the required number and risks the entire scheme failing.
Newcastle Pennsylvania September reports a 600-strong striker mob attacking labor supervisor Patrick McLaughlin at the wire works as black workers join the plant. Injunctions halt actions in Indiana and West Virginia while Illinois miners reject any wage offer, choosing to quit.
