Superintendent Clausen says advances include bray tips and better mantles to restore proper flame and pressure. Napthaline forms in autumn and is removed with solvents but cannot be eliminated entirely.

Sterling Oct 24 The Sinois and Mis sissippi canal now open to navigation ends a thirty year project. Governor Deneen attended with other notables as congress had appropriated about 8 100 000 since 1890. The 75 mile main line runs from the Illinois river near Hennepin to the Mississippi river below Rock Island with a 30 mile feeder to Rock River. The canal is 52 feet wide at bottom 80 feet at water line and at least 7 feet deep with 82 locks on the main line and a dam with 21 sluiceways for electrical power at one end.
E H Harriman calls Illinois Central President J T Harahan to New York for talks on plans to defeat the Fish interests In Chicago Oct 24. Local Harriman attorneys say no further steps will be taken to dissolve an injunction against Union Pacific and allied corporations for several days. A list will be shown of stock held by proxies for Stuyvesant Fish to be voted at the Oct 16 meeting. If the injunction stands they will seek to enjoin voting of stock held by allied corporations.
In Springfield on October 23 the Illinois Board of Agriculture accepted the resignation of Secretary W C Garrard effective immediately. Assistant Secretary E E McCoy becomes secretary pro tem until the January meeting. The board may appoint former President J K Dickerson of Lawrenceville as the new head with others as candidates still in contention.
Simpedn of Carrollton serves as secretary of the Green County Fair Association along with A. D. Barber of Hamilton as a board member and Richard Steele of Princeton.

In Boston on October 23 Rear Admiral Thomas O. Selfridge Sr. married Miss Gertrude Wilds of Jamestown Rhode Island at the Abbottsford Hotel. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Edward Witts with only the bride’s relatives and the admiral’s four sons as witnesses present. Mrs Selfridge is described as wealthy and owner of valued holdings.
A 66 year old heiress and 72 year old Admiral Selfridge govern a pair of valuable estates in Jamestown and Newport. The couple will reside at Admiral Selfridge's Washington home, establishing a permanent base for their affairs.
