In Chicago, October 18, State Attorney Deenen wrapped up closing remarks in the Luetgert trial. He rebutted the osteological experts presented by the defense and summarized the evidence. The judge will spend about an hour delivering instructions before the jury returns the verdict.
In Matanzas Cuba on October 18 a business delegation notes that Spain cannot end the war with Cuban autonomy, citing lack of loyal autonomy to fill offices. They expect a majority to favor annexation to the United States and plan to seek business support in Washington.
The director of the mint reports fiscal year 1897 coinage totals with gold at 71,500,000 dollars and silver at 21,000,000 dollars plus 3,000,000 dollars in subsidiary silver. The average silver price sets a gold to silver ratio of 1 to 81.94 for the year.
Admiral John L Worden retired and dead in Washington at age noted. He commanded the Monitor during the famous clash with the Merrimac at Hampton Roads in the late war.

The ladies of Memorial Lutheran church announce a two day bazaar at the corner of Stephenson and Chicago streets. Supper will be served both evenings with waffles and chicken planned for Tuesday evening.
A new group named Gibler's Concert orchestra has formed from Freeport's leading musicians after the Freeport concert orchestra disbanded. Prof. E. F. Tamm directs with Wm. Gibler managing. The roster lists twenty three players including Wm. Gibler first violin, Frank Harris second violin, Oscar Rotzler cornet, John Rotzler trombone, Harry Schroeder viola, and Emil Bellman clarinet. Inquiries for services go to manager William Gibler.

Night school at Freeport College of Commerce opens tonight with several meetings. Stephenson Lodge No. 61 will hold a special work session. Ladies selling Eminent Ladies bazaar tickets to report at K G hall Wednesday evening.
Beginning Monday Merck & Kroer will serve hot lunches with celebrated chef Tony Thompson contracted to prepare the meals.

The funeral for Frederic Bartlett, longtime Grace Episcopal member, was held this morning conducted by Rev. F. W. Keator with L. Z. Farwell as director. Pallbearers included Judge H. O. Hyde and Hon. M. Stoskopf among others. Also today, Mrs. N. C. Wilkey’s funeral took place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, officiated by Rev. Fr. Kalvelage, with Supervisor C. Dittmar arranging. Pallbearers included Frank and Anton Balles and Owen Bentley. Relatives visiting from out of town included Michael Drew of Lafayette Ind and his brothers John and Patrick Drew of Chicago, plus Mr. and Mrs. John Meyer of Chicago.
