A two-man gang yesterday held up a Union Pacific passenger train near Ogden Utah after boarding at Peterson station in Weber canyon. They forced the engineer to stop, uncoupled the baggage and express cars, and escaped with four mail bags though no one was injured and the safe was not entered. A posse organized at Peterson and a special train were dispatched to pursue the robbers along Weber canyon.
The grand chapter of the Illinois Eastern Star held its twenty second annual meeting in Peoria with about 500 delegates. Sessions included credentials, welcomes from Mrs. Sue M. Simson and Mrs. Mary Brown, secretary’s report, and floral demonstrations by Electa and Central City. Total membership reached 18,895 with 298 chapters represented. $6,083 paid to the treasurer. 3,380 new initiates that year. Tomorrow will decide the location of the Masonic Widows and Orphans Home and officers will be installed.

Sheriff Clingman reports no prisoners in Stephenson county jail.
Nashville Tenn Oct 14 special news arrives that eight masked gunmen raided the Henry county town of Poryear early today. Citizens awakened by explosions and gunfire were warned to stay indoors. The bandits looted stores, set several buildings on fire, and fled. A posse pursued as authorities estimated loot at least 3000 dollars.
A government statement shows in September 1896 the U S Mints coined 2,700,100 standard silver dollars from bullion on hand, containing 2,088,358 ounces of pure silver, at a cost of 1,862,671 dollars, yielding seignorage or profit of 837,428 dollars deposited in the treasury. Under free coinage the profit would go to the silver mine owner instead of the government.
London Oct 14 Sir William Harcourt denies reports of his resignation as Liberal Party leader in the House of Commons published by the St James Gazette yesterday. He states he has not resigned and that the rumor is unfounded.
