In Chicago a southbound Illinois Central fast mail train nearly wrecked at Grand Crossing after an object struck engineer Rugg who was knocked unconscious. The train halted only when the fireman discovered the danger just before disaster.
The Peoria grand jury issues a true bill against Oliver J. Bailey, chairman of the school board finance committee, on malfeasance charges. Forty three additional indictments are returned against Dougherty for embezzlement and forgery. The jury is discharged.
At a special directors meeting Lehigh Valley Railroad approved the purchase of the entire capital stock of Coxe Bros in Delaware Susquehanna water holdings and allied water companies along with related collieries and properties. The action was taken to absorb Coxe Bros and related interests.
Bloomington Illinois October 13 More than a hundred pen pals and teachers gather for the Illinois Schoolmasters club annual meeting at Cooper hall. The program centers on a debate on State Inspection of and peace Shall It Be Consumer with Prof J Barton of the University of Illinois arguing the university side and Principal J Stanley Brown of Joliet opposing.
Washington October 13 Special Announcement that Miss Alice Roosevelt leaves Yokohama today for San Francisco on the Siberia. Her departure is viewed as proof she does not share the superstition about unlucky days. The Harriman party touring Japan is aboard the same steamer returning to the United States.
Stockholm October 18. Both houses of parliament today unanimously adopted the government bill providing for ratification of the Karlstad treaty.
Washington expects John L. Hamilton of Hoopeston to lead the American Bankers Association after his election as president. The vote outcome confirms Hamilton's milestone in banking circles as the association prepares for forthcoming initiatives and policy discussions.

Henry Ratz a longtime resident and two term city treasurer died at his home in 7:30 this morning. He was born in 1825 in Illves heim Germany and emigrated to America as a youth. Survived by seven children Rev Father George H Samuel Henry Charles P H Curran John and William. Remains to be brought to Freeport for burial. funeral date not yet announced. He was a Democrat and member of St Josephs Catholic Church.
George P. Dawson, age 2 years 4 months, youngest son of Mr and Mrs John Dawson of 69 Center Street, died this morning at 12 15 after a brief illness. The remains were sent to Lena then to Waddams Grove for burial Saturday.
Mrs J O Munn of 744 Nineteenth street died last evening at the Munn home after months of illness from cancer. She leaves husband J O Munn traveling man, daughter Mrs Sweney of Wooster Ohio, son Ira Munn of Red Oak, and children Allen and Bessie Munn at home. Funeral last Monday from Des Moines residence. Remains sent to Wooster for burial.
The first meeting of the Woman's club is set for tomorrow afternoon in the lecture room of the First M E church. Full attendance is urged and dues are due. Program includes President's address by Mrs. F. H. Pewslee, Federation report by Mrs. G. Brown, speakers Mrs. J. A. Billig on Birds and their Song, music by Miss Edith Burrell on piano and Mr. Edwin Rotzler on violin.
The Smith Marshall entertainment earns rosy praise as its first season progresses. Mr Smith says audiences welcome the modest show, and observers forecast the act could rise to the top if momentum continues.

Elaborate preparations are under way for the eleventh anniversary of Freeport lodge No 462 Knights of Pythias to be observed Monday evening October 16 in this city. Invitations have gone to Monroe Wisconsin Pearl City Lena Orangeville and other neighboring lodges they will attend by large attendance. First and second ranks will be exemplified and a banquet will follow the exercises inviting members of both Freeport lodges.
D. C. Stover P. B. Stover and J. Fred Smith filed articles of incorporation with the secretary of state. The firm has ten years as a private concern and now becomes a stock company to enlarge the plant and raise output. Capitalization is set at $120,000 with officers D. C. Stover as president P. S. Stover as vice president and treasurer J. Fred Smith as secretary and P. F. Schryer as superintendent.
Residents urge Dr. W B Peck to hold an inquest into the death of Mr Phillips of McConnell after he died suddenly of heart trouble. The physician says he rarely orders inquests when the attending doctor signs a death certificate, unless poisoning or unnatural causes are involved. Insurance funds may be affected, but consent and cause of death hinge on an inquest. Phillips had been in Freeport consulting a local doctor before returning home and dying at the barn.
A rumor claimed an Illinois Central freight wrecked near Rockford injuring Edward Kerlin. An inquiry found the report false. a few freight cars were off track in the yards and a local wrecker was sent to clear the scene.
Sick and Afflicted Charles Light is ill with typhoid fever at 298 Union Street, home of Simon Schreiber. Mrs. H. M. Brubaker of West Freeport is reported very low, the elderly lady nearly eighty years old.
Albert Janssen sues Henry Janssen in circuit court through attorney Henry Bb. Witte. The partition action is scheduled for the December term of court.
Mathias E. Boughm and Martha L. Krug both of Monroe married this afternoon by Rev. J. K. Shields at the First M. E. church parsonage.
John H. Rife state inspector of building and loan associations traveled through the city this morning on his way home to Lena.

Williams hid the coat in a cedarville road cornfield. revolver lost in the river.
Adolph Rhode and Louis Gartman were arrested yesterday for burglarizing William Washburns barn and stealing two pairs of horse clippers. They pled guilty before Magistrate Bentley, were bound over to the grand jury on $500 bonds each, failed to meet them, and were sent to the county jail pending trial.
Closing board of trade prices show December wheat at 5.34 and December corn at 1.43 with oats at 2.55. At the Union stock yards cattle were 4,000 head, slow to steady with beeves 3.70 to 6.30, cows and heifers 1.25 to 4.50, stockers and feeders 2.16 to 4.30. Hogs 16,000 head weak to 6 lower, averages 5.05 to 5.24 for mixed butchers and 5.30 to 5.60 for good to choice heavy. sheep 15,000 head strong at 4.00 to 5.30.
