In 1870 a relative led Indian military police through Looshai country amid elephants and river delays. An officer aboard a cabin boat faced a dramatic encounter as a herd tested leadership, then drenched the papers with a surprise trunk shower, leaving him rueful yet safe.
Police Magistrate Donahue sent John Burns to jail for eating meat on Friday after a morning court in Troy, during an incident at a Ferry street restaurant with waiter Stephen Johnson. Johnson was discharged. Burns faces a stay in jail until next Tuesday.
The first general national convention of the Irish Independent League, led by John Redmond MP, opens in the Ancient Concert rooms with 800 delegates. Delegates cheer and jeer, praising Parnell while denouncing Gladstone and England, and vow to commemorate 1798 with renewed action. Redmond denounces Liberals and calls for independent action, Chanler of New York urges unity and pledges support from American Irish groups.
A mass trade procession in Rome to protest increased taxation confronted the interior ministry. Police dispersed rioters after 20,000 assembled. six officers injured and a rioter killed. The prefect ordered dissolution of the Roman Social Union as clashes continued with bayonets and infantry deployed.
Chicago October 12 defense for Luetgert closed its sur-rebuttal with one hour of testimony. Several businessmen testified to William Charles's honesty, while others disputed statements about May 1 Brease in the factory. Odorofsky explained German language issues in testimony about the Kersten examination, and the most important witness was barred from testifying. Mrs Feldt and Mrs Charles disputed rings in the vat, crossing lines of impeachment. McEwen opened the state’s final argument and spoke the remainder of the day.
A Cedar Falls dispatch reports a Waterloo and Cedar Falls Rapid Transit trolley car plunged thirty feet from an embankment three miles from Des Moines. One man, Myers, was killed, ten others severely hurt, with sixteen aboard. Baltimore retains the Temple cup for another year after a 9 to 3 win in Boston. The Orioles would claim 60 percent of gate receipts from the three Boston games and the two at home, with pennant winners due 40 percent unless players divide spoils equally. The series, except for the first game, was easy for Baltimore.
Corporation Counsel Flowers filed in county court a suit to void the consolidation of Detroit and Fort Wayne and Belle Isle street railways with Detroit Citizens' street railway. The 1894 franchise allegedly barred any consolidation with the others, and the complaint argues the new agreement violates that clause.

Houston dispatch says Yellow Fever expert Gulleras arrived and inspected the hospital and private homes but found no yellow fever. The state’s smaller towns are highly excited and many counties have trains forbidden to stop.
Washington October term of the United States Supreme Court began at noon with Chief Justice Fuller and all associate justices in their seats. No business was transacted beyond admitting attorneys to the bar. The court adjourned to today to pay respects to the president as required by long-standing usage.
