Indians Still Troublesome Near Minnesota Hostilities

In Minnesota reports from Carcano indicate Gen. Bacon orders Fort Sheridan Fourth Infantry and Seventeenth at Columbus barracks held in readiness for rapid deployment to Minnesota. Cass Lake correspondent says Indian runners report Bear Island hostiles entrenched and preparing to resist. Woodmen estimate about 500 Indians near Leach Lake ready to join. The situation is critical, with risk of attacks on settlers if action is delayed.

Grocery Store Destroyed in Arcade Addition Blaze

Early this morning around 2:80 fire gutted Toomb’s grocery store in the Arcade addition, burning the stock and leaving only walls and rear stand. Arcade and city departments responded, flames spreading to the roof before extinction. No insurance on the stock. loss severe, cause under investigation with some attributing it to tramps.

Special features announced for the Northern Illinois Teachers Association convention to be held in LaSalle on the 8th and 29th include a free excursion to Starved Rock with badges, an open air meeting, talks by Prof Roland D. President McKinley in Chicago and Iowa crowds

McKinley and cabinet members passed through Chicago en route to Omaha with little public demonstration. A separate escort of army and diplomatic officials followed from Washington.
