Victory by Volunteer in Quick Sea Race Near New York
In heavy fog and shifting wind the Volunteer, a long chancelow yacht, edged ahead of the Thistle in a demanding race off Long Island. At 4:23:47 pm the Volunteer cleared the line two miles ahead, with the Thistle finishing eleven minutes later. observers noted the Volunteer’s centerboard and superior windward work as decisive factors.
