Seed Wheat Quality Needs Improvement in California Study

G W Shaw of the California station studied many seed wheat samples from the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys and found general lack of purity, development, weight per bushel, weed content, and freshness. Heavy, plump seed is seen as more profitable, but experiments by E G Montgomery show that fanning mills do not permanently improve yield or quality. Individual plant selection remains key, and using screenings to remove weed seed is not discouraged.
