Common law marriage proved for pension claim

Washington November 22 Assistant Secretary Davis of the interior department reversed the pension bureau ruling in the Fry case. Charles A Fry and Sarah E Fry two minor children of John Fry of company E Twentieth Kentucky infantry were deemed to have a valid common law marriage after ten years living as man and wife in Kentucky and Illinois. Davis praised the sufficiency of evidence to establish common law marriage in Illinois despite no formal ceremony and destroyed county records.

In Opeka Kansas a residence on West Seventh Street burned at 4 am. Mrs M A Trige aged 42 and her 10 year old daughter Itthel perished. A son escaped with a broken leg by leaping from a second story window. Mrs Trige had escaped then returned to save her daughter and collapsed at the bedside.
