An advertisement claims deep discounts on groceries fruits and confections with prices not quoted fully but promises savings of 10 to 20 percent. The copy touts being go re agents for Slug Shot Sure Pop potato products and bug remedies.
Washington May 2 Gen Sheridan remains critically ill after a fresh heart attack and lung complication. Reports say he showed little change since the last bulletin and is guarded by a large medical staff including Surgeon General Moore and aides. Family and veterans await further word as officials restrict public updates.
West Side park hosted a large crowd for the final drill day with judges awarding infantry prizes to Louisville Light Infantry and Southern Cadets, while Linck Zouaves and Merchant Zouaves led in their categories. Other top placements included Witt Rifles of Columbia and Rock City Guards Nashville. A Baltimore drummer Griswold died by suicide after heavy drinking in Cambridge. Syracuse reports a minister named Joho W Taylor jailed for forgery.
In Baltim ore Maryland on May 28 the Southern Presbyterian assembly adopted the report on the doctrinal dispute with the Church South, approving continued conference commissions. The assembly supported temperance measures against liquor and church membership denial for liquor sellers, with limited dissent. Dr Woodrow’s case was sustained in part, and a telegram signaled readiness to begin union talks. The Methodist items included leadership changes and a decision to table tobacco questions while endorsing prohibition and home missions initiatives.
In Washington May 31 a large Democratic caucus debated tariff amendments tied to the Milletari bill. Lawlor of Chicago supported reducing duty on glass while O Neill protested, and others urged restoring duties on plateglass and related items. The session adjourned with rival factions pledging action on pension and tariff provisions.
A water spout on Saturday damaged crops and stock in Dawes County Nebraska near White River and Lone Tree, with heavy rainfall causing flooding. In Missouri near St Joseph, storms drowned stock and damaged farms, scattering oil and washing out rail lines and bridges. Hail storms in Kansas and Ohio caused structural damage and injuries, while Vermont residents battled forest fires threatening Havens Mill.
The assignment of seats for working reporters at the Democratic national convention has been completed in St Louis. A total of 248 seats were allocated after reviewing about 600 applications, with equal distribution among leading journals. Notices warn papers of their allotment, while badges will be available June 1 at the Olive Street arrangements office.
