The notice advertises sheer fabrics priced from 39c to 1.75 dollars, children's spring wraps at half price, hosiery bargains, new dress goods for suits and skirts, stylish novelties, and kitchen wares, urging shoppers to buy now for value.
A brisk sales pitch promotes nine bars of Galvanic soap for 25 cents. The copy touts large, pure white bars as the finest soap and urges readers to buy now while the opportunity lasts.
In Washington on May 26 the senate began formal reading of the tariff bill while the foreign relations committee advised confirming E H Conger of Iowa as minister to Brazil. Lieut Perry, detached from New York navy yard, received a five year leave to pursue arctic explorations. The president sent nominations to the senate including Charles Burdet Hart for minister to Colombia, John G Thompson, James Edmund Boyd as assistant attorney generals and other postmasters with Kate E Moore named for Geneseo Illinois.
Springfield May 26 Special. House bills pass to curb highway shootings and to fund state insane asylums from paying patients. Senate moves include a 4 million per year levy for two years about 53 cents per 100. Reconsidered Crawford primary election bill passes 36 to 7. Other measures advance or fail on elections, wills, school-teacher age, and local levies.
The Havemeyer trial resumed in Washington as extracts from the senate journal on contumacy were admitted in evidence. The government rested the case at 1 30. Johnson for the defense moved to dismiss the indictments.
The thousand striking tailors resumed work today in New York after securing concessions demanded from middle men.
Dixon Illinois May 25 survivors of the Thirteenth Illinois volunteers, the first regiment mustered into U S service under President Lincoln in 1861, held their annual reunion today. They were mustered in at 9 o clock on May 14 1861, a point once disputed with the Fifteenth Illinois but recent papers favor the Thirteenth.
George Ryder committed suicide at his home at 5 o'clock this morning. He placed a shotgun on a back fence and discharged it, blowing off his head. A past streetcar accident is believed to have affected his mind. He leaves a widow and two children.
The sixty eighth session of the Reformed Presbyterian church of North America known as Covenanters convened in Beaver Falls Pa May 26. Delegates were enrolled and committees on statistics mission conference and synod finances reported on opening day.
In Springfield on May 26 the Democratic state central committee plots a covert campaign for the June 7 judicial election. Circles target active Dem voters, appoint captains for fifty voters, and urge voting at noon, aiming to sway circuit judges and the supreme court. J. W.
