High School Tuition Paid by District Question
Stephenson county officials interpret a new school law to require districts to pay high school tuition for graduates of eighth grade in districts without a high school. Supt Blair treats district funding as automatic, enabling county students to enroll in Freeport High School at district expense without poverty declarations. The ruling, if upheld, affects many rural students seeking four year study.

May Drop State Fee Suits In Settlement Talks
The state may recover without prolonged litigation as suits against two former state treasurers are pending in Municipal Court. Settlement talks continue between the Ramsay Wilson estate and their Chicago bondsmen, while Deputy Ramsay and Wilson liabilities are being addressed. John C. Smith plans to reimburse the state on an installment basis after paying 2,000 of the 19,000 he collected. Bondsmen seek to extend claims against heirs of unnamed bondsmen, with formal judgment likely once an agreement is reached and each bondsman pays a pro rata share of 26,000. Defendants must plead or demur by Monday.
