The Cadiz reserve squadron sails for the Philippines by month end carrying 11,000 troops. In Washington Secretary Long announced the battleship Oregon has completed her voyage from San Francisco circling South America and returning safely.
The Oregon, after a long voyage of over 13 000 miles from San Francisco via Callao and the Horn, is reported out of danger from a Spanish squadron now in southern waters and may soon join Admiral Sampson. The Charleston sails for Manila to aid Dewey, while U S forces accelerate mobilization across multiple states as volunteers and regiments prepare for front service.
Prince Bismarck condemns the war as arising from American provocation and a misused Washington policy. He predicts friction as the United States shifts to a military and naval power, deeming war harmful to both America and Europe and calling the change a regression in civilization.
Adjutant General Corbin reports 95,000 volunteers mustered by 11 p.m. with 95,000 in service and more arriving. William Ewart Gladstone, England's grand old man, died at Hawarden castle at 6 o'clock this morning after a peaceful decline. He remained largely unconscious, cared for by his wife, with no narcotics used. Heart weakness hastened his end, and he will likely be interred at Hawarden alongside the church where he married over fifty years ago.
