The Senate approved 50000 for Cuban relief for destitute Americans and debated the Cuban belligerency resolution amid warnings of filibusters. The Rules Committee will present a rule setting debate time for the Senate approved $50 000 relief bill. The president urges Congress to appropriate 50000 for immediate relief of 600 to 800 destitute American citizens stranded in Cuba. Local authorities are kindly disposed but unable to assist, and the message asks for options to bring those in need to the United States.

Representative James M Large explains he accompanied Edith Jones and Minnie Waters on a trip to Chicago two weeks after Jones asked him for a pass. He says he learned the girl had run away from her mother at Gilman and that he registered the party under fictitious names at the Redfield House to avoid notoriety.
The Illinois battlefield monument commission met in Springfield on May 18 and decided to erect nine monuments at Lookout Mountain and the north end of Mission Ridge to Illinois regiments that fought there. They also reviewed plans for a granite monument 100 feet high atop Mission Ridge at the site of Confederate General Bragg’s headquarters.
Chicago games on May 17 showed Louisville beating Baltimore 6 to 0, Cincinnati losing 2 to 3 at Philadelphia, Pittsburgh 2 over New York, St. Louis defeated by Brooklyn 15 to 5, Chicago lost 1 to 10 against Boston, Cleveland routed Washington 7 to 0, and Western League saw Minneapolis beating St Paul 14 to 9.
Springfield May 18 No business was transacted in the senate due to absence of a quorum. The house met at 6 o clock and held a brief session, arranging bills by unanimous consent or suspension of the rules and setting special orders for later this week.
May 18 report from Chicago states Fred Pfeffer, second baseman of the Chicago team, has retired and is unlikely to play again. His fielding has been ragged this season, with the club losing five games attributed to his errors. Connor is slated to replace him at second.
Adolph Luetgert, famed sausage maker, was arrested on charges of murdering his wife. Police say evidence shows Mrs Luetgert was killed and body destroyed to hide the crime. The killer is believed to have shot himself in Hale Pond, with faces, clothing, and a pair of bicycle trousers found linking to William Pautz alias Pouch. The body appeared submerged for about a week.
Police discuss two methods used to dispose of Mrs Luetgert at the Di versey and Hermitage factory near Northwestern tracks. One theory says the body was dissolved in a vat, the other that it was butchered in a sausage mill and burned, with bones found near the vat and two rings recovered.
William Pautz known as Pouch, who murdered Alexander Harris and shot three others in a farmer’s household, is dead. His body was found in a mill pond at Prospect Hill, Waukesha County, after being dragged from the water by Miller Wood and John Bevil. The exact motive remains uncertain, with theories of remorse or insanity.
Chicago and New York faced a timed relay at Tattersall's with Mayor Harrison firing a pistol from a box above the start. First day results show Chicago and New York each tallying multiple miles and laps across three squads with Chicago leading in some segments and New York ahead in others.
Wilmington May 18 Hon Thomas I Bayard former ambassador to England arrived from New York with the Mayflower log. He deposited the log in the Security Trust vaults for safekeeping until its custody is transferred to the governor of Massachusetts.

The body of Mrs. Francis Moore, a flood victim, was recovered yesterday in the Cottonwood river three miles north of Guthrie Oklahoma. She lay half buried in sand where the Cottonwood joins the Cimarron.
