A May 14 storm in Xenia Ohio caused a catastrophic flood and cloudburst destroying homes and rails. Twenty five bodies recovered with eleven still missing as the Little Miami railroad and town properties suffered extensive damage across Danville, Indiana to Epaio and beyond. The mayor’s office converted to a morgue and officials appeal for aid for burial, clothing, and shelter.
A severe wind and rain storm near Dayton Ohio on May 14 causes wide destruction. Homes bridges and telegraph lines are swept away several trains blocked by washouts and floods alarm residents as floodwaters surge across Wolf Creek and the Miami River. Rescue efforts and casualties remain uncertain as the city surveys the damage.
A sweeping cyclone and tornadoes caused extensive destruction across Indiana Ohio and Madrid. Reported fatalities include Mrs Miller and Joe Miller in Danville while Attica and West Point suffered major property losses. Rail and telegraph lines were disrupted as farms houses and churches were destroyed or damaged. Damage totals reach into the hundreds of thousands with crops inundated and communities left without power or transport.
Senate debate over Blair's pension bill to extend aid to all soldiers of the late war and to their dependent parents intensifies partisan tension. Logan of Kentucky and Arkansas Senator oppose expanding pensions for former Confederates while defending deserving Union veterans and stressing fiscal limits. The measure, costing about 25 million dollars annually, faces opposition from some Democrats who warn against broad eligibility and potential abuse.
