The wreck blocked tracks and emergency crews battled to reach the injured as shambles spread across fields and toward the Susquehanna River.
In Elwood, across the Missouri River from St. Joseph, the Harroun grain elevator collapsed, killing three individuals Will Cost, Theta Gal, and Harry Smith, while John Chambers suffered fatal injuries.

Samuel Lobley arrested near Stroudsburg Pennsylvania for robbing the Equitable Life of twenty seven thousand dollars. A downed gas well three miles from Cutler drilled to the fourth sand. Connecticut legislature adjourns and declares Frank RB. The United States senator Wee Plitt deceased.
President Theodore Roosevelt visits Chicago to attend events hosted by the Hamilton and Iroquois clubs and the Merchants’ Club. He is greeted by Mayor Dunne, Governor Deneen, aldermen, and national guardsmen, then speaks on patriotism and naval strength, urging respect for foreign nations and a strong navy. He attends a luncheon, a banquet at the Fine Arts building, and a late reception before leaving by special train.
President Roosevelt greeted 8,000 Chicagoans at the Hamilton rooms during a Merchants’ event. A steady stream of attendees moved through the hall as the reception continued for more than an hour, with crowds and noise reported as they passed up the stairs.
A fast moving blaze wrecked Tolort Mrasete and neighboring establishments including John A Roberts & Sons department store and Howard & Dallard dog store. Fire damaged stock, warehouse and basement cotton holdings with extensive property losses estimated around 50 000 and 120 000 plus. Dozens escaped as flames spread within minutes, clerks and customers evacuated via ladders and roofs.
The committee on supplies of Freeport school district invites proposals to supply 500 tons of anthracite coal for city school buildings. Submissions due by 12 noon Monday May 16 1905. The committee may reject any or all proposals. C A McNamara Chairman.
