Springfield May 4 The Anti-Saloon league leader James K Shields reported that local option forces remain strong and that liquor interests have flooded Springfield with representatives trying to block a vote. He said the bill will pass if voted and predicts a decisive defeat for opponents once a roll call occurs.
Beloit college presents the first annual interscholastic declamation contest with Robert Southey of Lake Geneva Wis winning the first prize medal. William Garrity of Beloit took second place, with other speakers including Paul Nilson Rockford Ill Quincy Jones Freeport Ill Mauuing OConnor Joliet Ill Harold Underwood at Bee Wis FL Zick Polo Ill J Charles Webb Lancaster Wis. Professors F H Chase R H Stetson and William S Davis chaired the event.
Charles Zimmerman, called a mono-maniac by the Waterloo Courier, was recommitted to an insane asylum at Independence after being found with a wire-cutting outfit and a hook pole. He has a history of escapes and prior commits, with recent wire-cutting activity near Peosta and Winthrop and elsewhere in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
Commander Robert E. Peary USN born May 6 1856 in Cresson Pennsylvania. A Bowdoin graduate who joined the navy in 1881 he led multiple Arctic expeditions from 1886 to 1902 including Greenland surveys Melville land discovery and the Cape York meteorites while earning honors from major geographic societies.

Saturday scores include All Stars 14 138 over Y M C A, Eagles 31 19 over First M Hs, and the E and Ws forfeiture to Vinegar Hills.
In La Crosse Wisconsin May 6 the Wisconsin State league champions defeated Lethbridge of the Western Canadian league by strong batting and fielding. Final score La Crosse 18 Lethbridge 8. Batteries Ballles Hastings Killian Morrison and J Fogarty.
In a State league practice game between Fond du Lac and Oshkosh, the innings were halted in the fifth due to rain with the score 6 to 2.
In Oregon on May 3, the circuit court disposed of liquor indictment cases against Rochelle saloonkeepers, with most pleading guilty and fined. A test case, People v Mason Hayenga, charged with illegal voting after moving wards, ended in acquittal as jurors found no intent to violate the law.
