A dated advertisement lists prices on textiles, fabrics, ladies neckwear, box writing paper, spices, canned goods, produce, and household items. It touts wide discounts, claiming lower prices across a broad range and promoting two days of underpriced goods.
The Postmaster appoints new Illinois postmasters Theo E Habel Rossville Jas R Stetson Sheffield Walter OC Tuttle Hospital. In Washington the Universal Postal Congress opens with sixty countries. six week sessions, committees to report weekly, treaty arbitration defeated 43 to 26. Carey greets delegates and notes the history of the postal system.
The G A R encampment opened in Galesburg Illinois with a reception for National Commander Clarkson and patriotic exercises at Knox College chapel led by General John O Black and President Finley. A grand parade followed by a campus sham battle between Knox cadets and veterans’ sons highlighted the afternoon. Committees were appointed and auxiliary groups held routine meetings.
Still fighting between Greek and Turkish forces continues across multiple fronts. Crown Prince Constantine reports two Turkish regiments advancing on Karditza while a Greek commander requests reinforcements. Fifteen thousand Greeks retire toward Domokos as Turkish forces concentrate there. A major engagement is anticipated after a Turkish assault on Velestino was repulsed with heavy losses on both sides. Fighting persists at two additional locations.
W H Wade a 26 year old solicitor for the Daily Bulletin at Eugene Prince's boarding house on Exchange street killed himself. Earlier at 4 am he tried to drown in the Pecatonica river but was stopped by Policeman Charles George. Wade returned to his room ate breakfast, then later was found dead with a throat cut from ear to ear and a bloody razor beside him. Coroner Currier held an inquest. verdict: Wade died by a self inflicted throat wound with intent to commit suicide. Wade had worked previously for the St Paul Dispatch and had family in Dixon Illinois.
Springfield appear. Senate bills pass a fire escape commissioner appointment and mandatory fire escapes on all four or more story structures after a sharp 27 to 16 vote. Also the libel bill and a trust company deposit rule faced votes. House defeats bill to split Adams and Sangamon counties into separate judicial districts.
Grand officers of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen prepare reports for the Toronto convention. Two-year receipts amount to 1 158 201 and disbursements 1 100 360, treasury at 58 574. Total lodges 520 and membership 23 532, up 8 201 in two years. From 1884 to 1897 death and total disability claims totaled 3 667 904.
The famous pacing stallion Joe Patchen sold at the Splan Newgass sale at Dexter Park in Chicago for $15,000 to Clarence W. Marks of the city. Patchen, 8, with a 2:03 record and a 2:04 half mile track mark, drew fierce bidding as Chicago horsemen and buyers from other cities watched. The auction drew thousands, with Patchen previously owned by the estate of James P. Taylor of Chebanse Illinois.
Harris versus Modern Woodmen of America in Dubuque seeks 20000 damages for injuries from initiation. Federal trial before Judge Woolson hinges on whether the ritual followed the head camp form, a notable point given the lack of precedent for such fraternal orders.
OnIcaco May 5 special report states the Forena Bros bank took possession by confession of judgment of the A. L. Luetgart sausage and packing company. Property valued at $75,000. The firm, once profitable, encumbered assets trying to sell to a syndicate, hindering operations.
The Grand Lodge of Illinois Ancient Order of United Workmen met in biennial session at Streator with about 600 delegates from 429 lodges. Grand Master Workman P. T. Keily led a program including officer reports and committee reports, with debates over new age classified assessments. A musical entertainment featured the Apollo quartet. John W. Yantis led for grand master workman and Rock Island and Galesburg vie to host next.

John J Lipscomb of the Tuckett tobacco factory is unable to work today due to happiness over his presumably cutest baby boy born at home He believes the child may grow up to emulate a notable figure like Fred Douglas in time.
At a council meeting Mayor Younger claimed City Engineer Lagron undertakes substantial out of town work. Lagron showed a letter from Mayor Nieman inviting him to Freeport despite lower city pay, allowing outside work as long as duties remain. He took contracts for his son, without neglecting Freeport duties. Sale notice for Star Clothing House sale begins May 1, 1897.
Gus Dohlin of Minneapolis was arrested by Officer John Lorenz for breaking the seal on a merchandise car in Illinois Central yards. He climbed inside the car before conductor Frank Moran stopped him and locked him in. Dohlin appeared before Magistrate Lane, bound over to the grand jury in $200 bonds, unable to post bail and sent to county jail.
