Chicago March 28 representatives of the trainmen and conductors voted to ignore arbitration under the Erdman act and persist in preparations for a strike. They warn a walkout is imminent unless managers concede further.
Minnesota Supreme Court upholds Great Northern railroad right to issue 60 million dollars of stock authorized by directors. Attorney General had sought to block the issue, demanding review by the railroad and warehouse commission to prove necessity and purpose. The ruling affirms the railroad’s authority to proceed without prior examination.
The Corbin Banking company of New York assigned for the benefit of creditors to George C. Austin. Two members, George S. Edgell and Austin Corbin, are involved. Edgell is president and Corbin is vice president of the Manhattan Beach Hotel and Land company.
In St Paul the Minnesota supreme court held valid an anti nuptial contract forcing Dr T E W Appleby to remain unmarried after his wife Cordelia Day Wilder Appleby’s death in exchange for a $10000 annual life annuity. The bulk of the estate, valued between two and four million dollars, is to be held in trust for the worthy poor of St Paul.
West Baden Ind March 28 Charles S Chick Stahl captain of the Boston American league team committed death by own action today in a room at the West Baden Springs hotel by swallowing four ounces of carbolic acid. No cause is known.
Albany March 48 special. The assembly passed the bill for a recount of the votes cast in the November 1908 New York City mayor election.
The remains of William McLees who died Tuesday evening at his Pecatonica home were brought here this afternoon and buried in the city cemetery. Rev. Mr. Smith of the Pecatonica Congregational Church accompanied the casket and officiated at the funeral.
Harris orchestra will perform in Savannah on April 4 as part of a party hosted by the office boys of the C. M. & St. Paul.
Freeport voters go to the polls Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in ten precincts to elect two assistant supervisors, a town clerk, an assessor, a collector, and a highway commissioner. Democratic, Republican, and Socialist tickets list candidates, with detailed district voting locations and ward maps to aid voters unsure of their precinct.

A 14 year old lad from near Shannon ran away yesterday and was picked up this morning by Officer Rummelhagen in Freeport and held at the station until his father could fetch him. The boy confessed to a pattern with a local school teacher and admitted he was enticed by her presence, though the parents dispute the claim. He agreed to return home after threats of reform school.
County Clerk Fred Held has received from department headquarters of the Grand Army of the Republic an official badge as aide to the commander in chief. The badge features a silver spread eagle on black, a gold ribbon with our flag, and a Grand Army star made from captured cannon metal. He also received a bronze spread eagle emblem for past aide, perched on crossed cannons with a cannon shot pyramid.
Superintendent Beechley of the Illinois Central, based in Dubuque, met with Dubuque officials to discuss Wallace yards enhancements. The plan includes adding lead and switch tracks to increase car handling capacity. Work will begin after the frost ends, with repair tracks in the Freeport yards starting concurrently.
The commissioner of pensions at Washington has approved pensions under the February 6 act for several Stephenson county veterans. Freeport recipients include John Rotler Le. H Palmer George M Jashell Rudolph Koeneke and Robert Gothe at 12 dollars monthly. Charles Ro Anderson to receive 29 dollars monthly. Pearl City recipient James Pax to receive 12 dollars monthly. The talk highlights her twelve years since founding Hull House and its evolution into a citywide center aiding the needy with social clubs libraries nurseries and courts. Admission is 25 cents to benefit the Freeport Settlement home.
Hon A.2 Bergman spending winter at Daytona Florida writes an interesting letter to the Journal about the famous winter report. The complete text of the letter will be published tomorrow. Bergman expects to return to Freeport before soon.
James Williams of Wyoming and Effie Rhodes of Browntown Wisconsin wed at the Embury M E parsonage on Wednesday March 27 at 16 04. Williams described as a wealthy ranchman and Rhodes as a Wisconsin schoolteacher.
Members are urged to attend a meeting at Emerieck's jewelry store on Saturday night March 30 to arrange transportation for a trip to Rockford on Tuesday evening April 2. The secretary will coordinate details.
