A massive blaze tore through the Conover Piano building at 221 Wabash, trapping hundreds on upper floors as flames raced upward and walls collapsed. Forewoman Miss Wate Carney perished after aiding coworkers during a doomed elevator escape. numerous bystanders injured as debris and heat roared through State Street.
A devastating fire at the Conover Plano Company building trapped workers and caused numerous injuries. The readied list names Paul C. Snyder, Tamii Breseerman, A. J. McCullough, Mary Lapere, Hugh S. Wiiott, Herman Overman, Li. D. Cunningham, W. S. Lemley, Joseph Rogers, Professor Hane Line, A. Wise, Philip Farley, W. E. Murphy, Josie Baxa, Annie Baxa, David Schaefer, Andrew Nystrom, A. J. Nystrom, Fred Smith, Jacob Werchin, John McDernoutt, James W. Wall, Kate Carney, with many others severely burned or injured as workers leapt from windows during the five minute blaze at the six-story building housing firms handling photographic materials. The blaze caused a panic among 300 workers, with elevators and stairs blocked and escapes cut off.
Fire broke out in the Emerson Piano building, seven stories high, causing total loss of the structure and contents. Occupants included Emerson Piano, Conover Piano, Chicago Cottage Organ, and other firms. Building owned by Fred I. Ayers of Lowell, mass. Estimated loss ranges from 500000 to 950000 with about half insured.
