Debate over President Cleveland reform and political prerogative in Senate

Senator Wilson of New Jersey attacked the president’s civil service reform as a power grab. He argued the president’s refusal to share charges against suspended officers violated constitutional principles and eroded trust in public office. Wilson cited statutory suspensions and warned that executive discretion must be lawful. He criticized the administration as a “comedy of errors” and noted cabinet opposition to the reform stance while urging accountability. The report came from The New York Herald via a Mittsburg special.

Postal clerks deny planned strike in Washington meeting

In Washington on March 12 the Railway Postal Clerks declared they know nothing of a contemplated strike and disavowed any movement. Secretary Millard Wood was authorized to inform the Postmaster General of the stance and to reject the proposed action. The Postmaster General later sent a reply to Wood.

Washington reports show Commodore Truxton’s promotion to rear admiral sidetracked in executive session after his retirement list noted.
