Inauguration Day Thunder as McKinley Is Welcomed

Washington, March 5, a nonpartisan national demonstration greeted the new president. vast crowds packed Pennsylvania Avenue from street to housetops, banners waved, and cheers rose to a roar before McKinley appeared at the Capitol. The mood was solemn yet celebratory, with a flawless parade route and elaborate inaugural preparations. The president later reviewed marching thousands from the White House stand.

A grand inaugural procession moved along a 160 foot wide avenue from the Capitol lawns to the Peace Monument, crowding the route with patriotic crowds. The parade formed near the park east of the Capitol, then proceeded two and a half miles to Washington circle, with 60 000 national decorations as its basis.

Washington reports show former president Grover Cleveland boarding the lighthouse tender Maple for a ten day fishing excursion in the North Carolina sounds after a long day of work and a late night with lawmakers. Presidential Party Attends Formal Ball At South Entrance

The presidential party arrived quietly before 10 at the main south entrance and was guided to a reserved suite on the second floor. Mrs. McKinley sat in a velvet chair as guests were presented, later retiring from the crowd while the president and Mrs. McKinley joined the dancing. A long aisle formed for their promenade and the couple moved to a specially reserved supper room at the west end.
