General Stoessel Arrives St Petersburg Met by Officials

St. Pern Assard March 1 General Stoessel reached St Petersburg this morning. He was met by representative ministers of the war and navy and hundreds of people including many women. The absence of military and naval officers was conspicuous. Dispatches confirm the capture of the Shakhe river at the head of the bridge. The Japanese attacks on Gaute Pass were repulsed on the 27th and 28th. Russian advance guards hold their position at Kudaza. The Japanese opened heavy fire on Poutiloff Hill. Five Russian infantry companies charged the Japanese trenches near Shakhe river but were repulsed. sixty Japanese dead and some prisoners taken.

James A Logan Jr aged 17 colored confessed to murdering Mrs Della Tracy a domestic found dead in Hyde Park. Robbery motive cited by police and courtroom. Trial details indicate race and age noted in the public record.

Through Cars Soon from Freeport to Chicago

Rockford and Interurban line manager TM Ellis says right of way for the Belvidere to Elgin connection is nearly finished and construction on the Rockford to Chicago link will begin within ninety days. Thirty seven miles of grading and track laying could take fifteen months, with Chicago-bound cars predicted to run through Rockford by late 1905 if contracts are let on a hurry basis. Eastern capital backs the project, though no names are disclosed.

Cross Gets $8500 Judgment for Damages and Costs

In Galena circuit court yesterday the case of B E M Cross a former Illinois Central brakeman versus the railroad for 40000 injuries from a wreck at Scales Mound was settled with Cross to receive 8500. The dispute stemmed from train No 62 passing Scales Mound as train No 43 arrived late, causing a collision and injuries to Cross.
